August in the Chamber of Deputies: Parliamentary Work, Commemorative Events and International Engagements

August in the Chamber of Deputies was marked by the summer recess of the lower house. The recess ended on Tuesday, 25 August, when Members of Parliament convened for the 29th sitting of the Chamber. During the month, the Chamber’s leadership also commemorated the anniversary of the events of 21 August 1968, while further interparliamentary meetings took place.

Parliamentary Affairs

Following the summer recess, the Chamber of Deputies resumed its parliamentary work in August.

Continuing its 10th electoral term, the Chamber held a total of 2 sitting days within its 29th session, during which Members of Parliament debated legislative proposals and other items on the parliamentary agenda.

Throughout the month, the Chamber also remained active through commemorative events and international parliamentary engagements.

Commemorative Events

Commemoration of the 1968 Occupation of Czechoslovakia

On 21 August 2026, Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies Tomio Okamura, along with Deputy Speakers Barbora Urbanová and Jan Skopeček, attended a commemorative ceremony outside the Czech Radio building in Prague, honouring the victims of the occupation of Czechoslovakia by Warsaw Pact troops in August 1968.

Commemoration of the 82nd Anniversary of the Liquidation of the Roma at Auschwitz-Birkenau

On 1–2 August 2026, Deputy Speaker Jiří Barták participated in Sinti and Roma Genocide Remembrance Day. 82nd anniversary of the liquidation of the Roma camp in Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in Oświęcim, Poland.

Commemorative Pilgrimage to Georgia

Deputy Speaker Jiří Barták led a commemorative pilgrimage to Georgia to honour the memory of Czech soldiers and civilians buried in the country. The delegation, which also included representatives of the Ministry of Defence of the Czech Republic, visited memorial sites and historic cemeteries in Telavi, Rustavi, Borjomi, Senaki, and Poti.

During the visit, tribute was paid at Czech military graves and memorials, including sites dedicated to Jan Přibyl, founder of Borjomi’s spa tradition, and Otto Smik, the Czechoslovak RAF fighter ace born in Borjomi. The programme also included meetings with local municipal representatives, focusing on the preservation of Czech historical heritage and cooperation in identifying additional burial sites and wartime records.

Interparliamentary Diplomacy

Meeting with the Chairman of a Committee of the Japanese House of Representatives

On 17 August 2026, Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies Tomio Okamura met with  Chairman of the Committee on Rules and Administration of the House of Representatives of Japan Shunichi Yamaguchi. The meeting focused on parliamentary cooperation and the further development of Czech-Japanese relations.

Meeting with the Representative of the Kurdistan Regional Government

On 13 August 2026, Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee Radek Vondráček received Head of the Department of Foreign Relations of the Kurdistan Regional Government of the autonomous region of the Republic of Iraq Safeen Dizayee.
