Czechs to vote in general election in October 2025

Prague, 23/9/2025
Czechs are heading to the polls next month to elect 200 deputies, who will serve a four-year term. Citizens of the Czech Republic have the right to vote from the age of 18 – the so-called active voting right. Citizens who have reached the age of 21 on the second day of the elections are eligible to run for a parliamentary seat – the so-called passive voting right. All members of parliament are elected by proportional representation in 14 electoral districts, which correspond to the administrative regions of the Czech Republic.

The Chamber of Deputies is the lower house of  the Czech Parliament and plays a central role in the legislative process of the Czech Republic. It passes laws and approves the state budget, but also expresses confidence or no confidence in the government, ratifies international treaties, decides on the presence of armed forces on the territory of the state, and participates in monitoring compliance with the constitution and the functioning of democratic institutions.

Vote by mail possible for the first time
Czech citizens living abroad have the option of voting in person at diplomatic missions (embassies or consulates general). In addition, for the first time in the 2025 elections to the Chamber of Deputies, it will be possible to vote by mail. To use postal voting, you must be registered on a special list of voters at the relevant embassy and apply for a postal vote within the statutory deadline. Voting at some diplomatic missions abroad may take place on local dates, which vary due to time zones (e.g., in Los Angeles, election days are listed as October 2-3, 2025).

Foreigners with permanent residence in the Czech Republic who are not citizens of the Czech Republic are not eligible to participate in these elections.
