The elections to the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic are completed and the official results have been announced.
Voter turnout reached 68.95 % of eligible voters. A total of 5,621,717 valid votes were cast.
After all votes were counted, a total of six political groups that exceeded the five percent threshold for entering the Chamber of Deputies won representation in the 200-member Chamber of Deputies: ANO, SPOLU, STAN, Piráti, SPD, and Motoristé.
The distribution of seats (200 in total) is as follows:
- ANO (ANO 2011) – 34.51% of votes → 80 seats
- SPOLU (ODS / KDU-ČSL / TOP 09) – 23.36% → 52 seats
- STAN (Mayors and Independents) – 11.23% → 22 seats
- Piráti (Czech Pirate Party) – 8.97% → 18 seats
- SPD (Freedom and Direct Democracy) – 7.78% → 15 seats
- Motoristé (Motorists for Themselves) – 6.77% → 13 seats
The percentage gain for each group is the gain in the elections, not the percentage of seats obtained.
Women MPs
The new composition of the Chamber of Deputies includes the highest number of women in history – total of 67 female MPs, which is more than one-third of all seats.
413,603 valid votes are not represented in the Chamber of Deputies, as the parties and movements that obtained them did not exceed the five percent threshold for entry into the Chamber.
The next steps
The new Chamber of Deputies will convene for its first session after the results have been confirmed by the State Election Commission. At that meeting, the deputies will take their oaths and elect the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies and other bodies.
After this step, negotiations on the formation of the government will begin. According to the election results, ANO has the strongest position with 80 seats, and it may be crucial whether it establishes cooperation with any of the other parties or coalitions.
